Klaus Larres

Advisory Chair, The Cold War Project and International History and Foreign Policy

Klaus Larres is a historian and political scientist specialising on contemporary US and German/EU foreign, economic and security policies toward the transatlantic world, China and Southeast Asia. He is currently the Richard M. Krasno Distinguished Professor and Adjunct Professor of the Curriculum in Peace, War and Defense at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He writes and lectures on post-Cold War geopolitics, U.S. foreign policy, European integration, and the complex interactions that shape the triangle US-EU/Germany-China. He also has a great interest in the history of the Cold War and the politics of Winston Churchill. His notable publications, include Uncertain Allies: Nixon, Kissinger and the Threat of a United Europe (Yale University Press, 2022), Churchill’s Cold War: The Politics of Personal Diplomacy (Yale University Press, 2002) among others. 

Larres was the Henry A. Kissinger Chair in Foreign Policy and International Relations at Library of Congress and was a Senior Policy Adviser at the German Embassy in Beijing, China. He taught at Yale, SAIS (Johns Hopkins University),  the University of London and Queen’s University Belfast; and was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He is a member of the Royal Historical Society, International Institute for Strategic Studies and American Academy of Political and Social Science. He holds a Ph.D. from University of Cologne (1992). 

In 2023, he joined the Council for Global Cooperation and serves as an Advisory Chair to the vertices of The Cold War Project and International History and Foreign Policy.
