Drawing on half a century of firsthand experience and exemplary scholarship, Timothy Garton Ash’s Homelands tells the story of postwar Europe’s victories and tragedies.

Known as Europe’s “historian of the present,” Garton Ash has invested his career in understanding the intricacies of Europe’s past and present. Homelands provides an insightful journey through time and space around the continent, leveraging his personal notes from historical events, and describing the experiences of its leading individuals as well as revisiting the sites of significant historical developments.

Garton Ash offers an account of events as seen from the ground—history illustrated by memoir. Using memoir, he illustrates history from a ground level view, tracking Europe’s triumphs, including the fall of the Berlin Wall, democratisation and unification, as well as its failures, including the financial crisis of 2008 and the war in Ukraine. From the pen of someone who, in spite of Brexit, emphatically describes himself as an English European, this is both a ‘tour d’horizon’ and a ‘tour de force’.
